Designing websites for people who don’t speak English (without using translation)

Our student’s have come from more than 50 countries, our potential market is anywhere with broad band. This catchment area includes far more languages than we can possibly translate our site into. For this reason our websites have to be designed for use of people that doesn’t speak the language.

To do this we use:

  • Standardization – If there is already a widely used convention, use it.
  • Icons not words - again, standard icons that everyone will recognize.
  • Pictorial feedback – a cross if you’ve done something wrong, highlighting areas that need attention.
  • Minimalism – present the user with the minimum amount of data they need at any time.
  • Clear calls to action – make sure they are above the fold.
  • Video as well as text to explain things.
  • Step by step guides to achieving key tasks.
  • Easy access to support, phone, email, live chat, SL.
