Open Letter to the Obama Administration - Mark Prensky

Whenever I hear government misters talking about expenditure on electronic white boards or other technology as a way of improving education, a few question come to mind: How do these things improve education? What about them will make teaching more effective? How will they be used to help students learn more? From my experience the problems with the education system was not the lack of technology but antiquated teaching methods and curriculum.

In his letter to the Obama administration Mark Prenski author of Digital Game-Based Learning and Don’t Bother Me Mom—I’m Learning! expresses a similar view.

In Brief:

  • The Education system is out dated – both pedagogy and curriculum.
  • Education system in a worst state for the financial system.
  • Increasing spending without reform is wasteful.
  • Teacher training schools and are still preparing teachers for the ways of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
  • Effective pedagogy: Inquiry-based learning, problem-based learning, case-based learning, or learning by doing.
