This looks at instructor-assisted learning in virtual reality and draws a correlation between the architecture of gaming and a learning environment based on learner autonomy. Intuitive, purpose-built spaces combined with an assessment-based framework support the learning process. This method supports different patterns of learning and interacts with a rewards-based system which is highly interactive and engaging.
Shiv Rajendran - Using virtual worlds for content-based instructionA common problem with content-based instruction is directing students to the most appropriate material for their level and learning style. This is especially a problem when the learning is self-directed. Delivering the content through a virtual world with an exploration, feedback and reward system commonly used in computer games solves these problems while also accelerating the learning processes.
Dafne Gonzales - Teacher training in virtual worlds. What are the issues?Teaching in virtual worlds is a new challenge for teachers, and training is crucial for a successful performance. This presentation will describe the way language teachers are being trained to teach in Second Life. Different issues will be discussed: Second Life skills; educational tools; approaches to teaching; and class management, among others. Illustrations of training sessions and classes will be shown.
Cristina Palomeque - Achieving the ying-yang in language education in virtual worldsThis talk aims to show how students and teachers enter the virtual classroom with a set of expectations and beliefs about language learning and teaching which very often are not shared among the agents in this process. Identifying these mismatches will help teachers and students to minimize tensions, increase understanding and maximize learning opportunities.
